Step one: Install a redirect plugin
The plugin we use for redirects can be found here (it's free!).
Step two: Create a url you want to use a redirection
If you are using the plugin, the source url will be the new url and the target url will be where you want to redirect traffic to.
If e-commerce reporting has been set up on Google Analytics and the client has given you access to their Google Analytics account, you will want to redirect people to a tracked link. Build one using Google's Campaign URL Builder.
Here's how to structure the required url parameters for the builder…
Campaign Source = where the link was seen / clicked (Facebook, Newsletter, Google, SMS or an individual website)
Campaign Medium = marketing medium (Social Media, Email, CPC, Mobile)
Campaign Name = the campaign you are promoting (winter-sale-2020)*
Campaign Source = where the link was seen / clicked (Facebook, Newsletter, Google, SMS or an individual website)
Campaign Medium = marketing medium (Social Media, Email, CPC, Mobile)
Campaign Name = the campaign you are promoting (winter-sale-2020)*
*For comp sites, I usually just put the month so I only need to update it monthly.
The final result should look a little something like this…
Step three: test the url!
As well as using "Check Redirect", if you paste the url in the browser (e.g. website.co.uk/testing) and it is redirected to the correct page, yay! Your redirection is working. Next you will need to confirm that you can see the data in Google Analytics.
To access this data, log into the associated Google Analytics account. Then Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns. If the primary dimension is set to Source, find the url by matching it to the source for the url builder.
