You’ve got a strategy, a sending number, and a Klaviyo account. You’re ready to use Klaviyo for SMS marketing — but what comes next? How do you get started? Don’t worry; we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Before you set it up, it’s important to remember:
- Only Owners, Managers, and Admins can set up SMS on Klaviyo
- These steps apply if you’ve already set up email in your Klaviyo account
- It might be slightly different if you’re using the setup wizard for email and SMS
⚡️Understanding SMS sending numbers #
Klaviyo will provide a toll-free number and a branded sender ID. To receive these numbers, you only need to complete the SMS wizard (a step-by-step guide that simplifies your SMS set-up).
Definitions #
Toll-free number – The default sending numbers in Klaviyo for the US and Canada
Branded sender ID – A personalised SMS sender name that shows your brand name instead of a standard phone number when sending text messages
Long code – A standard 10-digit phone number used for sending text messages
Shortcode – A short and specialised 5 or 6-digit phone number used by businesses
Shortcode (vanity) – A customised and easily-remembered 5 or 6-digit number that is explicitly selected by the brand to match the brand or have an aesthetic appeal
Before you begin… #
You can have any of the following for your sender number:
- Toll-free number or short code for the US and Canada
- Branded sender ID or long code for Australia
- Branded sender ID, long code, or short code for the UK
- Branded sender ID or long code for Ireland
- Branded sender ID for Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, and Portugal
- Long code for Belgium
- Short code for New Zealand

⚡️Enabling SMS #
If you didn’t turn on SMS during the Klaviyo setup wizard, you can activate it in the SMS settings page. This is how you do it:
- Click on the name of your account in the lower left-hand corner.
- Go to ‘Settings’ → ‘SMS’
- Click on ‘Set up SMS for free’*
- Check all the countries in which you want to send SMS
- Click ‘Next’ and fill out your company information
- Review your sending numbers
- Create a branded sender ID for the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, France, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, or Portugal.
- Branded sender IDs must:
- Be between 3-11 characters
- Contain at least one letter
- Not have any special characters
- Branded sender IDs must:
- Click ‘Next’
- If you selected Australia, register your branded sender ID
- Choose one of the following options:
- Create a sign-up form — the best option for those who are new to SMS.
- Upload a list of previous SMS subscribers — the best choice for those switching from another SMS provider.
*If you don’t see this button, click ‘Activate’ next to any country where you want to send an SMS, then choose your number type.
